Daniela Torres is a multidisciplinary artist from Quito, Ecuador, based in Berlin, Germany.
Advocating for gender equality, the artist challenges societal norms through the mediums of photography, ceramics, and writing. Her work is a celebration of feminity, highlighting the profound beauty found in vulnerability, empowerment and liberation.
Founder of MŌ Gallery (2017-2019), Daniela Torres has curated numerous solo and group exhibitions before shifting her focus back to photography. In her portrait series “Boys” (2015-ongoing), the artist draws inspiration from the traditional female representation throughout History, while deliberately reversing the roles. By doing so, she refuses to confine women to the status of muse and aims to present the nuanced and multifaceted nature of masculinity.
Striking strong poses in front of her own camera, and using personal histories and archives in her projects, Daniela Torres creates powerful self-portraits reclaiming her narrative, and the right of women to be the protagonists of their own stories. Master of her story and image, she also emphasizes how women can be desirable subjects without being reduced to mere objects of desire.
In her art studio in Alt-Moabit, Daniela Torres also shares her artistic practice through interactive workshops. In her “Ceramic Dick Sculpture” workshops, participants are invited to sculpt dicks inspired by their personal experiences, as a way to release frustrations or explore fantasies in a symbolic and cathartic manner. Beyond the hands-on creative aspect, these workshops promote open conversations aimed at breaking down rigid ideas of masculinity.
